The month my rules started saving euros

Through the bear market I kept topping up my strategies and the rules kept spending those euros on dips. In September the direction flipped: for the first time, the rules sold more than they bought. What that means for buying the next dip.

The price came up, the average came down

Five months ago I handed Aurono a position that was 66% underwater. It is now 56% above its average cost. Two movements closed the hole from opposite sides, and neither would have been enough on its own.

Don't get treed by a chihuahua

Pete Blaber's own near-death story from Delta Force selection: exhausted and alone, he mistook a shape in the dark for a bear and jumped off a cliff to escape it. It was a pig. What that says about deciding without context, in general, in investing, and in how Aurono ended up built.

I aped into ENA. Then I handed my ENA position to Aurono.

I bought ENA manually, no rules, no plan, and watched the position sink about 66%. Four months after handing my position to Aurono, the paper loss is roughly half of what it was. Not because the price recovered, but because the average cost basis did the work.

Sleep on it, then go live

Pete Blaber couldn't sleep while planning a mission, so he asked why. The answer: the mind works in three phases, saturate, incubate, illuminate. What that means for decisions in general, for investing, and for how Aurono's Lab and shadow mode ended up shaped the way they are.

Deny yourself the scoreboard

Nassim Taleb's Fooled by Randomness has a confession: knowing a result is statistical noise doesn't stop you from feeling it, so he built a rule that keeps the number away from him until it means something. Aurono runs on the same admission.

Tie yourself to the mast

Annie Duke's Thinking in Bets revives an old idea for beating bad decisions before they happen: the Ulysses contract. Aurono is built on the same principle.

Your decision was right. The outcome wasn't.

Annie Duke's Thinking in Bets calls it resulting: judging a decision by how it turned out, not how the decision was made. Another gem: once one branch of the tree becomes reality, the others disappear too, taking with them the context you'd need to judge yourself fairly.

The best decision maker is a model of you

Daniel Kahneman's Noise studies judges, doctors, and insurance underwriters, and keeps landing on the same finding: a simple model of your own past decisions usually beats you making the call live. That's the whole argument for rules, and it goes well beyond trading.
